The Executive as Community Leader – It’s the “bigger picture!”

The nature of an executive or C-suite role is that it is often treated as all-consuming. Leaders who place prime value on focusing on the demands of the role to the exclusion of community involvement and building relationships outside one’s company are missing opportunities to grow and become even more effective leaders inside their organizations. There is a “bigger picture” to being an executive that they may not teach you in business school or in corporate training programs. Because being in the C-Suite is all-consuming, one might not see this big picture or make community involvement a priority until the end of one’s career. This approach shortchanges executives of experiences that will make them far better leaders and reduces the opportunity to positively impact their communities.

Paula Bennett  is former CEO of J. Jill and is an independent director on the board of At Home (NYSE:Home).  As CEO of J. Jill, she doubled its business to $700 million and led the IPO of the company. Paula is also a graduate of The Ohio State University and is an active member of the Dean’s Advisory Council at Fisher College of Business.

Paula began engaging in the community towards the end of her career. With the clarity of 20/20 hindsight, she understands the ramifications of over-weighting work vs. community involvement. She learned that the excess hours of corporate life are no substitute for the additional dimension that community involvement provides.

Join us for a thought-provoking session where Paula will discuss:

• The inter-dependency and reinforcing aspects between executive leadership and community service

• The creation of personal and professional growth from this inter-relationship

• The cultivation of community relationships that bridge into one’s work life opportunities

• The pivotal role community service during one’s career may have in later career/post-career roles
