The Power of Choice

Choose your own future as a guiding light in darkness

Our assumption about those who live lives unlike ours is colored by the stories we hear and pictures we paint.  Young women who have undergone tremendous hardship and emotional trauma - we assume they struggle with things like hope.  We decide that "adolescent orphan girls" are likely to see the world with weary eyes and backs turned, unlikely to notice the silver lining or find greener pastures.  We assume that their pasts, market by negligence, violence, illness, or extreme poverty, have done irreversible damage to their futures.  We wonder what they hold on to as they face each day anew.

100 Camera Commit2Change went on a journey to find out, and discovered the surprising truth.  Each girl, when given a camera and asked to capture her life through photography, revealed an unexpected optimism.  The girls' photographs alluded to their personal stories - not tragic nods in their childhood, but an homage to the simple pleasures of the every day.  The project uncovered something we didn't expect:  these girls may be carved of a painful past, but still insist on daily hope.

What we expect to see versus what the photographer shows us in her photograph creates a pleasant contradiction.  We, as the audience, are left bewildered and inspired - bound to see her reality differently.  And what we ultimately discover is that the photographer is a catalyst for change in her wold and ours.

The allure of the photograph lies not just with its subject matter, but with the perspective behind the lens.  In this compilation of photographs, the images do more than give us pause.  They ask us to open our minds, challenge what we know, and find awe in what we have yet to be taught.
