Building and Retaining the Talent Pool in the Columbus Region

Central Ohio is thrilled to be one of the 20 cities that Amazon is considering as a location for HQ2 - its second headquarters.  It is estimated that winning this bid could create approximately 50,000 new jobs and have a $5b economic impact to the 11-county Columbus Region.   A primary criterion for Amazon finalists is a high-skill labor pool. Central Ohio is a hub for business and industry headquarters, home to almost 60 colleges and universities, including one of the nation’s largest public research universities, and cost-of-living is relatively affordable. It is also considered a center for data analytics – Battelle is a major force in science and technology discovery, IBM has a Client Center for Advanced Analytics, Accenture has named Columbus one of 14 U.S. innovation hubs, and Facebook has announced a data center in New Albany opening in 2019.

According to Columbus 2020, our region has one of the nation’s highest concentrations of millennials (ages 25-34) – ranking 8th among U.S. metros - and is the fastest growing major metro in the Midwest. Columbus’ growing recognition also means increased competition to recruit and retain talent among businesses and industry. The Governor’s Office of Workforce Transformation’s report Building Ohio’s Future Workforce presented the following critically important statistics: 47% of today’s jobs could be phased out in the coming years due to technological advances; 65% of today’s secondary school students will work in jobs that do not yet exist; 75% of the companies expected to be listed on the S&P 500 in 2027 have yet to be established. Finally, the competition for talent also results in added scrutiny on the region’s and state’s challenges – high opioid use, low health value rankings, economic disparities, transportation infrastructure opportunities.

Join WELD for a strategic discussion moderated by Becky Cornett that will feature a panel of experts who are on the front lines of building, attracting and retaining talent in our community and who are rising to meet the challenges of the region.  Our distinguished speakers include:

  • Michelle Brown, COO, CoverMyMeds
  • Don DePerro, President and CEO, Columbus Chamber of Commerce
  • Rhonda Knight, Vice President & Inclusion Manager, Huntington
  • Yolanda Zepeda, Assistant Vice Provost, Office of Diversity and Inclusion, The Ohio State University

This program will encompass diverse perspectives on:

  • Competing for talent – now and in the future - among business, industry, and educational institutions in the region
  • Partnerships needed between educational institutions and business/industry needed to meet the mission outlined by the Governor’s Office of Workforce Transformation: To grow Ohio’s economy by developing a skilled workforce, promoting effective training programs, and connecting Ohio employers with qualified workers.
  • Components required to ensure that the Columbus Region is a leader of economic growth in the future
